Fuel Oil Shipping Guide
Moving residual fuel by sea: vessel types, heating, discharge performance, freight economics and chartering terms.
Residual fuel is a demanding cargo. It is viscous, temperature-sensitive and prone to leaving residues, so the vessel, its heating capability and its discharge performance are commercial variables rather than technical footnotes.
Vessel segments
- Coastal and small tankers — regional distribution and barging to terminals.
- MR — the workhorse for regional product and fuel oil cargoes.
- LR1 and LR2 — longer-haul product and residue movements.
- Aframax and Suezmax — larger fuel oil and dirty product cargoes on arbitrage routes.
- VLCC — occasional long-haul residue movements and floating storage.
Heating and handling
Cargo must be kept above a workable temperature for pumping without overheating it and degrading stability. Heating coil condition, insulation, pump capability and last-cargo history all affect how fast and how completely a parcel discharges — and therefore how much demurrage the voyage attracts.
Freight economics
Freight is assessed on route, vessel size, bunker cost, port and canal costs, waiting time and market tightness. For arbitrage cargoes, freight is often the swing factor that decides whether a geographic spread is tradeable at all.
Chartering terms that matter
- Laytime and demurrage rate — the cost of delay.
- Heating clause — the temperature the vessel must maintain and on whose account.
- Pumping warranty — the discharge rate or pressure the vessel guarantees.
- Last three cargoes — an acceptability check for contamination risk.
- Vetting and approvals — terminal and charterer requirements the vessel must satisfy.
Operational performance
Consistent commercial performance comes from planning: pre-fixture vetting, realistic laytime assumptions, temperature and sampling protocols agreed in advance, and disciplined post-voyage claims handling.
